Web Scraps: Some of My Favorites From 2009
No time to wax poetic today, I’m still nursing a hangover from Saturday night (thanks John) but wanted to share some of The Giant Panther’s favorite tracks I’ve stumbled across during the past year. Most of these tunes don’t come from an official LP release, some are remixes, some are covers, but all are good times. I had ten songs I wanted to share with you today but creating hyperlinks is a pain in the ass, so here are seven.
Vega is another project from one of my favorite new finds this year, Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo. Upbeat dance pop circa 1983. I love the hook in this tune.

Another one of my favorite artists emerging in 2009, The XX. I think it’s hilarious when you listen to them you get the feeling they are way too cool for school, like they can barely be bothered to even sing the damn song. I mean this in the nicest possible way. Here’s a fun remix of a Florence + The Machine tune, the original is great too, there are only small peices of the original tune all chopped and mashed up in this version, the first verse is all XX. The singer from Florence has great pipes, reminds me a little of Fiona Apple a little. I mean this in the nicest possible way.

We all know Hot Chip by now I’m sure, some of us love them (me), some of us hate them (Chuck Digital). They are coming back with a new album set for next February. From the two tracks I’ve heard they are going back towards a more traditional electro pop song. Their last album got a little harder, a little weirder, a little stronger. They also did a great cover of a Joy Division tune earlier this year, has been on my playlist non stop. These guys are embracing their soft side, I think even Mariah Carey would have trouble with lyrics like “Oh, my heart has flown to you just like a dove” but Hot Chip can pull them off. I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Forget me trying to even classify this DJ Rupture/Matt Shadetek collaboration. Dub? I dunno. Just know that it’s filed under “Beatz” in my DJ playlists. And it gets Two Giant Pinky rings up. I like how the synth is this song sounds like it was lifted from The Price Is Right Orchestra.

Bibio has also come into my life this year, and for that I am thankful. He’s been around for a while, but it took his amazing album released this year “Ambivalence Avenue” to get on my radar, and this album will surely be on my top of the year for 2009. He then quickly followed it up with another album called “The Apple and the Tooth” full of awesome remixes of some of the tunes from Ambivalence, and what I think are a few new tunes, or old tunes rehashed. I had a tough time picking which one to share with you, I highly recommend both albums. I don’t know how to classify Bibio either, but rest assured he’s also filed under “Beatz”. Kind of a mix between Bon Iver and Flying Lotus. I also included a bonus track for you, this one is a beautfiul instrumental from an EP he put out called “Ovals & Emeralds”.
